A seasonal guide to yachting vacations
Itching to get out on the water next year? Discover the world’s best yachting destinations by season, from the alluring Caribbean which is at its prime in winter to Europe’s luxurious Mediterranean coastline which celebrities flock to for festivals and shopping every summer.
Winter in the Caribbean
Especially if you’re based in the United States, the Caribbean is a prime destination for winter yachting vacations. There are plenty of yachts for sale in the area or it’s easily accessible if you’re sailing there from home, and between November and March, there is sunshine and warm temperatures. The hurricane season makes sailing here challenging outside of winter.
The islands of the Caribbean, particularly the British Virgin Islands, St. Barts, and Antigua, are renowned for their vibrant culture, stunning beaches, and clear waters. There are ample opportunities for snorkelling and diving to spot the rich marine life, and fun festivals full of colour like the Trinidad and Tobago Carnival in February.
Spring in the South Pacific
Are you looking to explore less-travelled waters? Head to the South Pacific next spring when the area enters its dry season, and the ocean is calm. The South Pacific has many idyllic islands offering a tropical getaway, from friendly Fiji and tiny Tahiti to the captivating Cook Islands. Expect vibrant coral reefs, pristine white sand beaches, green countryside and plenty of opportunities to explore the fascinating Polynesian culture.
The remoteness of these destinations requires careful planning, particularly in terms of provisions and navigation, but the effort is worth it. The South Pacific offers some of the world’s most secluded and tranquil sailing, around beautiful islands largely untouched by tourism.
Summer in Europe
With its chic port towns, vibrancy and a combination of busy beaches and concealed coves, the Mediterranean is a sought-after area for sailing. The summer brings pleasant temperatures, plentiful sunshine and calm ocean conditions ideal for yachting, but be prepared for crowds.
Prime places include the French Riviera from Cannes to star-studded Saint Tropez, Italy’s Amalfi Coast where colourful houses cling to the cliffsides, and the wealth of islands around Greece. When sailing the Mediterranean coastline, you’ll experience world-class cuisine, lively bars, cultural heritage and great shopping, on top of the stunning scenery and opportunities for active adventures like hikes and water sports.
Fall in New England
As summer fades, retreat to waters closer to home and explore New England’s coastline. This network of states becomes a picturesque tapestry of rich and gold hues in the fall, a beautiful backdrop for sailing the region’s historic harbours and charming seaside towns.
Newport, Rhode Island, and the coastal areas of Maine and Massachusetts offer a mix of history, culture, and natural beauty. Fall is also the season for local festivals, where you can enjoy fresh seafood and regional specialities. Eating fresh lobster in Maine is a must! Remember to prepare for the shorter days and avoid long journeys when sailing New England in the fall.
